I'm taking a web analytics class this semester as an MISM elective. The funny thing is that I'm not in the MISM program--not yet, at least. You see, I took the ISys Core last year (Fall 06/Winter 07), but I was only a sophomore when I started that. I still had a lot of generals and other pre-req classes to take before I could move on to the management core (like Acc 210 and BusM 301). I thought at the time that meant I couldn't apply for the MISM yet. I have since found out that I could have applied, but it has turned out alright as I have been able to finish up most of my generals and pre-reqs and I'll be ready to move on this year. I discovered though that I cannot handle too many generals classes in one semester (I need something that I actually enjoy!), so I have started taking MISM elective classes that will do me no good unless I get accepted into the MISM program (wish me luck!). That brings me to why I am taking this class.
The web analytics class interested me because as I have looked at career possibilities, web analytics is one area that I could see myself enjoying. It's also nice that Omniture is right here in my home town of Orem and seems to be a pretty cool company. At this point, I'm thinking of a few possible future employers, but Omniture is definitely one of them. Last semester, I participated in the web analytics competition sponsored by Omniture and the eBusiness Center here at BYU. It really opened up my eyes to the possibilities of web analytics and I learned a ton.
The first day of class was definitely a little different than I expected, but it was awesome. The focus was more on getting to know our classmates so that we'll be able to work together as a unified group and help teaching each other. Dr. Rogers was able to set the tone for a more spiritual, collaborative learning atmosphere. It seems like it is going to be a really cool class.
I signed up for the class wanting to gain a better understanding of web analytics, but now it's more than that. I now want to gain relationships with my classmates and experiences working together. I think that we'll learn more about web analytics, as well as other practical things for our lives, than we would in the "traditional" classroom setting. I'm really excited about this class this semester.
